O que são os sutras do Budismo?

Os sutras são os textos sagrados do Budismo. As palavras de Shakyamuni Buda têm autoridade absoluta e os sutras são coleções dos seus sermões. "Sutra" é uma palavra do sânscrito, que no Bramanismo se refere às escrituras sagradas nas quais todos os tipos de ensinamentos e regras eram registrados. Essa palavra não é exclusiva do Budismo e originalmente queria dizer "linha" ou "fio".

Após a morte de Buda, seus ensinamentos foram transmitidos de pessoa a pessoa através de seus discípulos. Mas seus discípulos, preocupados com mudanças graduais nos conteúdos dos ensinamentos, reuniram-se em um concílio para coletar, organizar e corrigir o registro oral dos ensinamentos de Buda.

Nesse conselho, Mahakashapa (o sucessor de Buda) assumiu um papel de liderança. Os sutras foram corrigidos de acordo com a memória de Ananda, que tinha a melhor memória entre todos os grandes discípulos de Buda. Os preceitos corrigidos de acordo com a memória de Upali, de quem se diz ter sido o mais proeminente dentre os grandes discípulos de Buda na prática dos preceitos. Esses registros foram compilados por um grande número de discípulos de Buda, que dessa maneira, foram capazes de verificar o que havia sido ouvido, e assim os autenticaram como ensinamentos de Buda.

Finalmente, foram feitos estudos e comentários sobre os sutras e sobre os preceitos, chamados de "sastras". O termo que inclui tanto os sutras, quanto os preceitos e os sastras é "Tripitaka" ou "três cestas"; em outras palavras, recipientes nos quais os sutras, os preceitos e os sastras ficam guardados.

Mais tarde, a quantidade total de literatura Budista tornou-se muito vasta e por esse motivo refere-se a ela como "Completo Cânone Budista."
